Short Trip to Amritsar

The meaning of the word ‘Amritsar’ translates to ‘a pool of nectar.' This beautiful, holy city lives up to its name in every way. Located in Punjab, the city is close to Pakistan geographically, with the Wagah Border situated 28 kilometers from the city. Amritsar is a city with a small-town feel. The city has prospered immensely and houses upmarket hotels and fancy malls. However, it is still deeply rooted in its rich history and culture, represented by its holy shrines and rich cuisine. The city is home to the Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple. It is a key spiritual center for the Sikh religion and attracts millions of visitors every year, from all over the country and the world. Another famous temple in the city is the Ramtirth temple, which is believed to be the site of the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki, the writer of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Other tourist attractions are the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Mata Temple. Amritsar played an important role in the Indian Independence Movement when it suffered from the tragic Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The site has been converted into a memorial, where people can pay homage to the martyrs.
